In a nutshell, an employer needs to get special permission from the Canadian government if they want to hire a foreign national – the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). After they obtain this permission, you are now allowed to apply for a work permit for that employer. However, there are cases and exemptions that do not need LMIAs.
